- its billing as the “oldest surviving barracks
block in the UK” doesn’t do justice
to this romantic castle marooned in the middle of
lovely Loch Awe. Boat trips from the village in

Kilmartin -
Kilmartin Glen is one of the most important historic
sites in Europe. A few square miles is littered
with stone circles, burial chambers, castles and
the ancient capital of Dalriada - Dunadd. Go south
towards Lochgilphead. This area is littered with
standing stones and other ancient relics. Ancient
capital Dunadd is worth a visit with mysterious
footprint on the rocks. Great exhibition and visitor
centre at Kilmartin House (in village), an excellent
stop with first class café. Open
