Duart Castle, Mull – get there by direct boat trip from Oban. This is the ancestral seat of the Clan MacLean who still take up summer residence. A heady atmosphere of bloodthirsty history. Tearoom. Additional nearby activities include Torosay Castle and lovely Gardens and the Mull Light Railway.

    Kilchurn Castle - its billing as the “oldest surviving barracks block in the UK” doesn’t do justice to this romantic castle marooned in the middle of lovely Loch Awe. Boat trips from the village in the season or admire from A85 or A819. There’s a further castle a couple of miles on.

    Kilmartin - Kilmartin Glen is one of the most important historic sites in Europe. A few square miles is littered with stone circles, burial chambers, castles and the ancient capital of Dalriada - Dunadd. Go south towards Lochgilphead. This area is littered with standing stones and other ancient relics. Ancient capital Dunadd is worth a visit with mysterious footprint on the rocks. Great exhibition and visitor centre at Kilmartin House (in village), an excellent stop with first class café.
